Season Preview
The Bethel women’s tennis team wrapped up the 2008-09 season at 13-3 overall with a 5-1 KCAC record for a second-place regular-season finish. They won the KCAC Tournament, earning a berth at the NAIA National Tournament. Senior Paige McKinney finished her career with a host of honors – 1st Team All-Conference, KCAC Player of the Year for the second straight year, Academic All-Conference, NAIA Scholar-Athlete and NAIA 1st Team All-American. Katie Malotte, Maryville, was selected 1st Team All-Conference as well as being voted KCAC Freshman of the Year. Katie Robertson, senior from Lawrence, and Maya Kehr, junior from Goshen, Ind., earned 2nd Team All-Conference honors. Both were Academic All-Conference as well as NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
The 2009-10 team returns five letter winners from last year’s National Tournament team – in addition to Kehr and Malotte, juniors Rachael Bachman, Emporia, and Allison Kaster, Wichita, and sophomore Julia Huxman, Wichita. This group will be joined by freshmen Miranda Weaver, Hesston, and Shayne Runnion, Phillipsburg. In 2008, Weaver was the Kansas high school 4A state singles champion and Runnion a state qualifier in singles. With a strong returning core of players and some new talent, the Threshers should once again be in the mix for the KCAC championship.
“
Our team is absolutely blessed. Few teams can have such diverse personalities, yet mesh so well. The combination of women is only going to be an asset: each has something to contribute. This year, the opportunities are endless. — Paige McKinney
