Season Wrap-Up

The 2009 season ended on a high note for the women’s soccer team. The team was picked to finish ninth in the KCAC, but they had much different plans for the season. After a rocky non-conference schedule, the Threshers started to put things together in the second half of the season, and they competed well against some tough competition that was nationally recognized throughout the season.

“We had a goal to make it into the post season this year,” said Coach Moore. Behind the leadership of the seniors, that’s just what the women’s soccer team did, finishing the season in fourth place and hosting a quarter final match in the KCAC Tournament. This was the first time the program has seen the post season since 1999.

“I am very proud of the team and especially the seniors this year,” said Moore. “They chose their goals, and they all worked very hard to reach them. They gave a tremendous effort on and off the field. They should be proud of what they accomplished this year.” The Threshers did lose a heart breaker in the quarter final round to Friends University. After playing to a scoreless draw earlier in the season, the Falcons came out with just a little more energy than the Threshers. The Threshers gave up a goal late in each half to lose 0-2 to the Falcons that finished the season one spot below the Threshers in the final standings. “We’re a very young team in terms of playoff experience. It was a great learning experience for our program, and I am confident we will be back competing at that level for years to come” said Moore.

The program graduates a very important group of seniors. The seniors that say goodbye have had their share of ups and downs during their tenure, but they have continued to stay with the program because of their dedication to soccer and the friendships they have created here at Bethel. They have seen three different coaches in their time, and the team hopes to build on the foundation that the seniors provided this year. This year’s team graduates defenders Patrice Dixon, Emily Kliewer and 2009 Honorable Mention defender Kaylee Wiechman; midfielders Maya Kehr and KCAC Second-Team midfielder Michelle Love; and keeper Rosie Hammon-Hartkop. Kliewer was recognized for the second straight year as an NAIA All-American Scholar for her efforts in the classroom.

Next year’s team looks forward to the return of KCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year and Second Team All KCAC forward Megan Schrock with her 13 goals and three assists as well as 2009 Honorable Mention midfielder and second leading goal scorer Kelsie Wilson. These all conference performers will be joined by several starters from this year’s squad. Next fall, the Threshers hope to continue where this team left off.
