The women’s soccer program is gearing up for its 15th season of competition, coming off the best season in 10 years with a record of 8-9-2 (5-3-1 in the KCAC), for a 4th-place KCAC finish. The Threshers look to continue that form again in 2010 under thirdyear head coach Jason Moore.
“We lost a great group of seniors that have been a part of this program for a long time,” he said. “But I think this year’s team, although very young, will be a great mix of youth and experience. We feel really good about this incoming class – not only in the depth we’ll have, but we’ve also done a pretty good job recruiting some [Kansas] players.”
Leading the list of returning starters is Megan Schrock, senior from Kalona, Iowa, the Threshers’ top goal scorer, Second Team All-KCAC and Co-Newcomer of the Year in the KCAC in 2009. Joining Schrock will be returning three-year starter Kelsie Wilson, senior from Dodge City, who was tied for the team lead in assists last year and was Honorable Mention KCAC. The Threshers will rely heavily on Schrock and Wilson to contribute again in front of the goal. Rounding out the senior class is Nakita Menefee, Wichita, who looks to step into the starting lineup after an injury-plagued 2009 season, and Jessica Reger, Flagstaff, Ariz. Reger was forced to take a year off in 2009 due to early seasonending injuries but hopes to win back her starting role from the 2007 and 2008 seasons
The seniors will be joined by returning starters Orrie Dean, Flagstaff, Ariz., Renicia Yoder, Newton, and Louise Zurkee, Andale, all juniors, and Alix Rodriguez, sophomore from Newton. Angelica Kaegi, junior from McKinney, Texas, and Lizzie Shelly, sophomore from Lenexa, will look to compete for starter spots after getting quality minutes off the bench in 2009.
The Thresher women will be joined by 11 new players in 2010, counting on several transfers to step in right away and provide some stability and leadership: juniors Xenia Baca, Dodge City, Lexi Garcia, Wichita, Savannah Longoria, Yuma, Ariz., and Erica Seger, Newton, and sophomore Linsey Laird, Newton. The freshman class includes Brooke Banning, Lenexa, Desiree Bishop, Newton, Keshia Franks, Guthrie, Okla., Brooke Hansen, Andover, Caroline Mayhew, Lawrence, and Terra Scott, Newton.
“I am very excited for this group of players to come together and see what we can accomplish in 2010,” said Moore. “This class will give us some depth in important areas on the field [that] we haven’t experienced in a long time. I know I am not the only one who is excited about 2010. We have attracted some very talented players, not just on the field but in the classroom and in other areas of performance. I think they will all be a great fit for the soccer program and the Bethel community.”
